This is one of the many antiaircraft gun positions protecting the harbor of Cherbourg from possible Luftwaffe attacks. Two caliber .50 machine guns and one 37-mm A.A. automatic gun constitute one of these self-propelled units. France, 13 July 1944.

Our lightest antiaircraft weapon was the single caliber .50 machine gun mounted on a suitable tripod. This caliber .50 machine gun was also mounted on jeeps and trucks, and our tanks carried similar guns. In the early days of the African campaign, the Germans flew low over our positions until a large number had been shot down by the caliber .50 machine-gun fire. Thereafter the German fliers were less eager to engage directly our ground troops.
